Alley ADUs
This PSU studio project explored how Portland’s Residential Infill Project could utilize accessory dwelling units to transform residential alley conditions. This alley in the Alberta Arts District becomes a new pedestrian promenade, while balancing the privacy of residents. Each ADU has a rooftop garden that drains down the exterior wall into an interconnected fountain that runs along the alley. These fountains serve the public as a place for seating, and the connecting channel of water creates a soft boundary between public and private spaces. Another large consideration is all occupants’ access to sunlight and outdoor space. At ground level, each ADU has one shared outdoor space at the entrance, and one private outdoor space. This high-density environment maintains privacy with strategic window placements, glazing treatments, and visual barriers.
