Aperture Boathouse

The proposed rowing club site of 306 SE Ivon Street orients itself with the river’s edge facing the beautiful unobstructed views of Downtown Portland, the Tilikum Bridge, Ross Island Bridge, and the sun descending behind the West Hills. The main interest of this design explores various ways to preserve, obstruct, and emphasize sight lines of interest, and their interaction with the solar path. The program is divided along its central axis by a narrow water feature, which acts as a soft boundary between public and private program elements. The private half is dedicated entirely to the Rose City Rowing facilities. The public half includes the community center and rentable space looking out onto the river and opens to the rooftop deck. The Willamette Riverkeepers offices are also found in the public zone but maintain controlled access. The boathouse level includes a fitness center and storage for common boat length combinations of 62'/45'/35'/27'. A series of small concrete retaining walls at the water’s edge are woven into the stairs, providing a place for people to sit and enjoy the river.
