Eco Plaza
This proposed design for the Shattuck Hall Ecological Learning Plaza consists of three “floating” roof structures that maintain the open feeling of the existing steel structure. The structural foundation of steel frames that resist lateral and moment forces creates a unique opportunity for a design with minimal visible structure. This proposed design maintains structural minimalism by suspending the roof above the steel frames with steel rods or cables that are secured to existing notches in each of the steel frames. Because there are slight 6” variations in the distance between the existing steel frames, suspending the roof in this way allows all three roof structures to be constructed in the same manner. The wood structure was designed to join and sister many smaller lengths of 2x lumber, as it is intended to be constructed by architecture students.
